The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, made a call in his 2018 State of the Nation Address to:
• Initiate an additional 2 million people on HIV treatment by 2020
• Find 88 000 missing TB cases annually
• Screen 7 million people for non-communicable diseases in the first year.
In response to the President’s request, the National Department of Health (NDOH) launched the “Cheka Impilo campaign” that aims to accelerate screening and testing for HIV, tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. The campaign will be hosted by the Mine Health and Safety Council in partnership with the United Manganese of Kalahari Mine, with the goal of encouraging everyone in the South African Mining Industry (SAMI) to make healthy lifestyle choices and to seek medical attention timeously so that the vision of a South Africa that is free from the burden of disease can be realised.
